Winter paw care for Indiana dogs: salt, ice, and dry pads

Between Plymouth, Bremen, Culver, and Argos, every sidewalk and driveway gets salted from December through March. Salt is rough on paw pads — it dries them, cracks them, and stings any small cut a dog already has.

What we do in the van

• Trim the hair between the paw pads flush so snow cannot pack into ice balls.
• Check each pad for cracks, splits, and salt burn.
• Shorten nails, which change how a dog grips slick ground.
• Use a gentle, moisturizing shampoo for winter-dry skin.

What helps at home

• Rinse or wipe paws with warm water after every walk on treated pavement.
• Keep a towel by the door — most salt comes off with 20 seconds of drying.
• Add a paw balm if pads look dull or chalky.
• Resist shaving a double coat in winter; that undercoat is insulation.
